Itaewon Halloween Festival
One of the well-known nightlife hubs in Korea is Itaewon. Despite the fact that I don't drink and am not a party person, I like to be among the group just to take in the vibe. I decided to visit Itaewon during the Halloween festival. I arrived at around 9.30 p.m. People were everywhere. In Korea, I have never witnessed a crowd this size. Several people were out in the streets walking about in costume for the Halloween celebration. The atmosphere was extremely upbeat.
But, life is really unpredictable. Isn't it? When everything was going so well, a terrible accident occurred on one of the streets. I was only a single street away from it. There were so many celebrations, I had no idea what was going on over there. When we kept hearing so many ambulance sirens, the situation got urgent. They suddenly pulled a large group of individuals from one street and spread them out on the ground. For them, the volunteers were performing CPR. Several people were already dead in front of me before I could make sense of what was going on. It was one of the worst nights I ever had.
The police and the emergency rescue crew
arrived at the location after some time. Yet, by that point, things had already
gotten worse. When everyone from the general public had left, I stepped aside,
called a cab, and arrived at the hotel. The next day, when I learned that the
catastrophe had claimed more than 150 lives, I became aware of the heat of the
situation.
It was one of Korea's worst days. Several young
people lost their lives. I wish that this kind of incident should never happen anywhere
anytime.
